How Congenital Heart Disease Affects Somali Children: A Silent Crisis That Needs Urgent Attention

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, attend school, play with friends, and dream about the future. Unfortunately, for many children in Somaliland and across Somalia, congenital heart disease (CHD) threatens that future from the very beginning of life.

Congenital heart disease is a condition where a baby is born with a structural problem in the heart. It is one of the most common birth defects worldwide and often requires specialized medical care. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, these heart conditions can lead to severe complications or even become life-threatening.

The Challenge in Somaliland

​

Access to pediatric cardiac services remains extremely limited. Many families live far from healthcare facilities and are unaware that symptoms such as difficulty breathing, poor weight gain, bluish lips, frequent chest infections, or extreme fatigue may indicate a serious heart condition.

Even when a child is diagnosed, the cost of surgery and travel abroad is far beyond what most families can afford. As a result, many children remain untreated, and some lose their lives while waiting for help.

Bringing Hope Through Partnership

One Heart One World Association was established to ensure that no child is left behind because of financial hardship or lack of access to specialized care.

We work closely with local hospitals, international medical centers, and humanitarian partners to identify children with heart disease, coordinate their medical evaluations, arrange referrals, and facilitate life-saving treatment.

Through these partnerships, dozens of children have already received successful heart surgeries, giving them the chance to return home healthier and enjoy a brighter future.

 

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Early diagnosis can save lives.

When congenital heart disease is detected early, many children can receive treatment before irreversible damage occurs. Parents and caregivers should seek medical attention if a child experiences:

• Difficulty breathing during feeding or activity

• Poor weight gain

• Persistent tiredness

• Bluish discoloration of the lips or fingers

• Frequent respiratory infections

• Heart murmurs detected during examination

Regular health check-ups and increased community awareness are essential to ensuring children receive the care they need as early as possible.
